Project Description

Bern Station Square is one of the most important hubs in the city of Bern in Switzerland, accommodating public transport, cyclists and pedestrians, and is home to Bern station, the second busiest station in Switzerland. a major 16-month reconstruction was recently carried out to bring the square up to modern standards and to make it aesthetically appropriate as the gateway to Switzerland’s capital.


Project Requirements

Landmarks around the station such as bus and tram stops, elevators, taxi stops, telephones, information signage, lighting and drainage are all coloured red in a shade to match the red used by Bernmobil, who are responsible for public transport in Bern. Concrete structures used at the station including stairwells and telephone stands were also coloured red. Other concrete colours were used around the square to enhance the urban landscape and turn the square into a lively meeting place.


Sika Solution

Along with Sika® Viscocrete® high range water reducing superplasticiser, Sika dry concrete pigments were added to the concrete mix. Sika pigments was utilised to give uniform bright coloured concrete that is aesthetically pleasing, durable and will withstand mechanical damage. coloured concrete offers a multitude of decorating solutions with a wide range of colours. It fits perfectly in a dynamic sustainable building and modern architecture.
