The £12 million Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre, which is run by Greenwich Leisure Limited, a charitable social enterprise that operates under the brand ‘Better”, replaces the old Ken Marriott Leisure Centre which had served the town for 40 years. It includes a competition standard 25 metre swimming pool, a studio pool with moveable floor together with other facilities including a 100 station gym, climbing wall, sports hall, dance studio and coffee shop.
A cost effective, guaranteed, watertight solution was required for both pools and surrounding areas through both the concrete structure and construction joints.
Sika® Watertight Concrete was specified to construct the swimming pools. Sika® Watertight Concrete is increasingly being employed to ensure a watertight solution and contains state-of-the-art concrete admixtures that reduce the water/cement ratio, thus increasing the density of the mix and minimising the size, volume and continuity of the concrete’s pores. They also block the remaining pores to produce a completely watertight finish.
Cemex supplied 800 cubic metres of Sika Watertight Concrete to Shepherd Construction, the Main Contractor for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre. To complete the system, construction joints were sealed with the SikaSwell® jointing system, which consists of joint sealing profiles that expand on contact with water to seal any voids between adjoining concrete slabs.
The use of BBA certified Sika® Watertight Concrete system produces not only dependable, leak-proof swimming and competition pool facilities, but also protects any basement or below ground structure from water ingress, ensuring peace of mind to clients, designers and contractors.
